MARTINEZ, CA — Tuesday is the day: It's the last day to turn your ballots in or vote in person for the gubernatorial recall election that could unseat first-term Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Ballots include 46 candidates who are vying for Newsom's job, including 24 Republicans, nine Democrats and 13 others. Polls and drop-off locations opened at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. "Voters who still have their vote-by-mail ballot can drop it off at any polling location, vote center, or ballot drop box," said California Secretary of State Shirley Weber. "If you're voting in person, you have a right to cast your ballot as long as you are in line by 8 p.m." Ballots can also be dropped in a U.S. Postal Service mailbox but must be postmarked Tuesday, Sept. 14. If you are not registered to vote, there's still time. Same-day voter registration is available at each county election office, polling place and vote center across the state. To do so, you just need to fill out a voter registration form at the site. "[Those] ballots will be counted once the county elections office has completed the voter registration verification process," Weber said in a statement. The state Republican Party last month decided not to endorse a candidate, but conservative talk show host Larry Elder became the party's front-runner, leading polls for months. In a recent poll from the University of California, Berkeley, Elder was the leading choice for people planning to vote for a recall candidate in the election, with a 28 percentage-point lead over the next closest candidate. Democrats stood behind Newsom throughout the intensifying recall effort. On Monday, President Joe Biden showed his support in person for Newsom by flying into the Golden State.
