PERKASIE, PA — A 7-year-old Perkasie boy found an old grenade in his backyard while on a treasure hunt with a friend last weekend, according to a report.
The kids were playing in the 500 block of Middle Road on Sunday when they found a box labeled "840 cartridges, 5.56 mm" the boy's mother, Jamie Hunt, told NBC10. The box, found under tree branches, contained a grenade, mortar tips and fuses, the report states.
Parents contacted Hilltown Township police after learning about the grenade, NBC10 reports. Hilltown Township Police Chief Chris Engelhart told the outlet that the grenade was not a threat as it appeared to be empty.
The items were removed by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department's Ordinance Disposal Unit, and there was no danger to the public, Engelhart told NBC10.
