LAKE FOREST, CA — The California Recall votes have been cast, and it is all over but the counting. Whether or not Gov. Gavin Newsom will be recalled will be tabulated in each county across the golden state in the coming days. In Lake Forest and across Orange County, preliminary results from mail-in ballots showed that 57 percent of voters said "no" to the recall, while 42 percent were in favor of unseating California's first-term Democratic governor. Hopeful candidate Larry Elder was the front runner of the hopeful candidates by a large margin, earning 52 percent of the votes. The race for Newsom's replacement will be irrelevant if voters reject the recall. Ballots included 46 candidates hoping to replace Newsom, including 24 Republicans, nine Democrats and 13 others. Polls and drop-off locations opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m., with last-minute, in-person voters waiting in lines upwards of 30 minutes to cast their ballots, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters website. As of 8 p.m., the Orange County Registrar of Voters announced over 755,000 Orange County voters cast their ballots by mail. In-person votes across the county are still to be tabulated. "We will post updated results until 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and then updates will continue each weekday at 5 p.m. until the official results are posted," OC Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber reminded all that "if you're voting in person, you have a right to cast your ballot as long as you are in line by 8 p.m." Same-day voter registration was available at each county election office, polling place and vote center across the state. "[Those] ballots will be counted once the county elections office has completed the voter registration verification process," Weber said in a statement. The state Republican Party last month decided not to endorse a candidate, but conservative talk show host Larry Elder became the party's front-runner, leading polls for months. In a recent poll from the University of California, Berkeley, Elder was the leading choice for people planning to vote for a recall candidate in the election, with a 28 percentage-point lead over the next closest candidate. Democrats stood behind Newsom throughout the intensifying recall effort. On Monday, President Joe Biden showed his support in person for Newsom by flying into the Golden State.
