Description
Free Bicycling Tour - Examples of Oakland communities' resilience in public spaces during COVID - Version North Oakland This north Oakland version of Resilience Oakland bicycling tour visits various sites where neighbors used public space to show their care for each other, and creativity to bring joy, basic needs, and light to all who happen upon these gems. Our ride will be curated by WOBO volunteers, Natalie Mall and Gordon Douglas. Our approximately 6-mile ride starts at Fruitvale BART and meanders north towards downtown, Golden Gate, Rockridge and Temescal neighborhoods to visit different forms and expressions of community in the last 18 months; think street art, street corner Buddha, Town Fridge, Flex streets, and more. The ride ends at Temescal Brewing at Telegraph and 41st, where optional post-ride beverages and chat can continue. Natalie Mall moved to Oakland two years ago and has been loving getting to know her community by foot and by foot-powered wheels. She is a staunch proponent for a more livable East Bay for everyone, and is constantly contemplating creative solutions and compromises in this direction. Gordon Douglas is an assistant professor of urban and regional planning at San José State University, where he is director of the Institute for Metropolitan Studies. He is also a resident of Oakland's Clinton neighborhood, where he is an occasional caretaker of the community shrine on his corner. His current research focuses on the urbanisms of crisis and hope that have reshaped our streets over the past 18 months. Check out some of his research: https://www.covidsigns.net/post/douglas The ride is mostly flat. It will take 2.5 hours. Please bring water and some snacks, apply sunscreen, and bring weather-appropriate layers. Be sure your bicycle is in a safe, rideable condition. We will practice social distancing and masks are strongly encouraged as we will be discussing the significance of each stop. Note: The ride will be canceled if heavy rain or poor air quality is predicted. Notifications will go out to all registered participants 24 hours in advance. We want every person who lives, plays, and works in Oakland to feel safe and comfortable walking and bicycling, and that they know how to make their neighborhood a better place to walk and bike.
