WESTPORT, CT — A man is facing charges that he tried to rob a couple while brandishing a knife, according to police. James Cummings, 41, of Bridgeport was charged with first-degree attempt to commit robbery, third-degree attempt at larceny, carrying a dangerous weapon, and second-degree threatening. He was held on $250,000 bond.
Police received the call Sunday at 11:14 a.m. that a couple were the victims of a robbery attempt at the Ruth Cohen Steinkraus Post Road Bridge.
Cummings approached the couple quickly from behind and began walking in step with the male victim. He told the couple to bring him to their car.
He repeated the demand as he allegedly brandished a knife and threatening the woman, according to police. The woman then darted across the Post Road evading cars.
Her husband followed and the suspect then fled the area walking eastbound toward Jesup Road.
Neither of the victims were injured.
The victims provided description of the suspect which was sent to all of the responding officers.
A member of the Westport Fire Department spotted a suspect fitting the descriptors in the area of 302 Post Road East. Officers then found Cummings, who police said had a knife on him.
"I am extremely proud of all the officers who assisted with this incident," Police Chief Foti Koskinas said in a statement. "The high level of skill and teamwork they exhibited led to the quick apprehension of the suspect. Additionally, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Westport Fire Department for their assistance."
Cummings had been out on bond at the time of this incident stemming from a Sept. 5 incident. He had been charged with two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, second-degree threatening, third-degree attempt to commit assault, and second-degree reckless endangerment.
