HOBOKEN, NJ — After unannounced fireworks filled the skies over the Hudson River on Sunday night, residents of New Jersey and New York City took to Twitter to guess who'd set them off. Some incorrectly pointed to the Hoboken Italian Festival, but the organizers had canceled their display this year out of respect for the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11. Several said the loud booms were in bad taste after the somber day. Surprise fireworks on the Hudson tonight. Just what NYC wanted this weekend - unannounced, extremely loud explosions. Nice work. Heard a bunch of explosions on Bleecker and then these dudes showed up. Turns out it's out it's fireworks from the MTV VMA—how about you's fuck all the way off pic.twitter.com/mOLBL6YLoi— Brian Valentine (@BrianValentine) September 13, 2021 Green, orange, and white fireworks show tonight on the Hudson in NYC. Beautiful show, seemingly completely unplanned Judging by the colors and timing, we're guessing it's for the @MTV VMA show Can anyone confirm? https://t.co/mxmoPDa8D1— Charles Forster 🤖 (@Chazthetic) September 13, 2021 Another theory was that the fireworks were from a celebration on the Hoboken waterfront. A couple apparently got engaged there Sunday. But late Sunday night, a reporter Tweeted: A spokesperson for Staud confirmed that the fireworks were part of a fashion show tonight in Lower Manhattan — on the day after the 20th 9/11 anniversary. FDNY said no fireworks were scheduled today. pic.twitter.com/RHY5ieMoLQ— Jesus Jiménez (@jesus_jimz) September 13, 2021 People still questioned, in a thread, whether the company had a permit. Well there you have it folks: Staud Clothing did the very loud fireworks display last night. Who gave them the permit tho? https://t.co/iaqFqI7unk— Michael Roston (@michaelroston) September 13, 2021 And several Twitter commenters said the surprise booms were unwelcome for another reason: Shout out to the person in NYC government who approved the fireworks display that coincides with the precise moment when parents are trying to get their young kids into bed before the first day of public school— Michael Roston (@michaelroston) September 12, 2021 Here's a place to look up sanctioned fireworks displays in New York City.
