NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Zoning Hearing Board will soon shift its focus back to a proposal to build a Wawa gas station and convenience store in the township. The board is expected to hear public comment from residents at its Sept. 20 meeting about Provco Pineville Acquisitions' requests for zoning relief to build the 5,585-square-foot facility, Bucks Local News reports. Provco is seeking approval to build more gas pumps than permitted under current zoning laws on the proposed site, at the southwest corner of Newtown Bypass and Silver Lake Road. The developer wants to build eight pumps, but only six are allowed at the 4.95-acre property. Provco is also requesting zoning approval to place signage closer to the bypass than currently permitted. The company first submitted its plans for the site in May 2018, but it has faced strong opposition from the Newtown Township community and committees tasked with approving building projects. The Newtown Township Planning Commission declined to recommend the project for approval in April. A week later, the Board of Supervisors directed the township's solicitor to oppose Provco's requests for zoning relief. If the Newtown Township Zoning Hearing Board does not grant the requested zoning relief, Provco can appeal that decision or move forward with plans to build six fueling stations under current zoning laws.
