Description

I’m thinking in terms of something dynamic where different people can play different instruments on different songs, lead vocals can alternate among members, lyrics don’t have to be in English, and there’s room for multiple genres on the same album (or song). Let’s start a band, write and record some music together, and take it as far as we can in the time of COVID. Where I’m at: • In terms of sound, my inspirations include John Berberian, John Cale, Gaye Su Akyol, Emma Ruth Rundle, St. Vincent, Fad Gadget, Dengue Fever, Khruangbin, Zartong, Space, Goblin, Daikaiju, Sly and the Family Stone, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Oscillations, and the Doors. • The lyrical tone I have in mind is sort of psychedelically bardic, if you will. Think Barış Manço, Erkin Koray, the Legendary Pink Dots, early Pink Floyd. Percussionist/drummer: • Experimental percussion is encouraged. • If you sing, rap, or play other instruments, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to do so. • N.U. Unruh (Einstürzende Neubauten), Sattar al-Saadi (Ahmed Mukhtar & co.), Danny Shamoun on Viza's Maktub and Brian Viglione on NIN's Ghosts I-IV are all within the ballpark of what I have in mind, though my mind is open. Other musician: • Bağlama, qanun, and synthesizer/keyboard are all instruments I’m very keen to have on board, but I’m more interested in your approach to songwriting than in what instruments you play. • Familiarity with the maqam system is strongly preferred. If your background is Turkish classical or Turkish folk, you know this stuff, though we probably know it by different names, which is OK. • If you’re just a guitarist, that could work, depending upon your tastes. Victor Kunda Kasoma (the Oscillations), Jenny Hoyston (Erase Errata), Shant Bismejian (Viza), and Dick Dale are on the right track. Pentatonic solos are not what I’m looking for. • If you’re just a bassist, that might work, maybe. • Woodwind instruments are most welcome. • Vocals appreciated but not necessary.
