Police Shot At Overnight 2 Blocks From Cook County Jail

CHICAGO, IL — A man who police said was drinking on a sidewalk near the Cook County Jail shot at officers when they approached him, police said in a report. No officers were injured, and the man was taken into custody after trying to flee on foot. Police said they responded to the 2700 block of West 25th Street at 1:39 a.m. for a call of shots fired, and saw the man there drinking. They said he pulled out a handgun and shot at the police. Police did not return fire, they said. "We need help, we need help," could be heard from police officers at the scene via dispatch, according to the Chicago Scanner Twitter account. The original call came in for 26th and Washtenaw, which is one block east on the jail. The man attempted to flee, but was caught. Charges weren't announced as of early Sunday morning. Chicago police told Patch charges were still pending later on Sunday.
