Meet up at the Mattress Factory for a back-to-school event with Region 1!
This back-to-school event will include light food and refreshments, a 1-hour guided tour of the new show, "making home here", and a 30-minute activity that teachers can take back to school with them. The new show "making home here" features five emerging and mid-career Pittsburgh-based artists: Gavin Andrew Benjamin, Naomi Chambers, Justin Emmanuel Dumas, Njaimeh Njie and Harrison Kinnane Smith. The exhibition plays off the ideas of home and domestic space – home as both a place of dislocation and belonging, home as an imagined or public-facing space and an intimate place that holds family stories and aspirations. The five artists explore liminality, placemaking, familial bonds and systemic racism’s impact on the housing market. Working across a range of mediums and playing off the domestic spaces of the Mattress Factory Annex, the artists mine personal and public histories to create immersive environments that welcome visitors to enter and contemplate what it means to create a home.
This event is free for both PAEA and non-PAEA members. There is a $5.00 fee for non-PAEA members who wish to obtain Act 48 credit for this event. Participants will receive 2 hours of Act 48 credit.
