Description

Join AIA Wisconsin members on a construction tour of the Journal Square - 1924 Building. This tour is intended for AIA members and Architecture Industry Professionals. Josh Jeffers & Co. is in the process of redeveloping the Journal Square Redevelopment buildings with EUA and Quorum Architects, Inc. The contractor for this project is CG Schmidt. This project involved further developing the 1924 Building which is six stories, approximately 149,000 sf building into approximately 141 market rate apartments with supporting common spaces. Retail will be located on the ground floor with parking being developed in the basement. A new light well at the center of the building allows for light and fresh air to the interior units. There will also be a fifth-floor community room with an exterior balcony looking out over the North-East skyline of Milwaukee. The structure is reinforced concrete and is clad in pink Kasota limestone from Minnesota. It can be best described as Art Deco style. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The building retains integrity in its exterior architectural design and detailing, more than sufficient to convey its historic significance as an excellent example of an early 20th century newspaper building. As part of the historic preservation, the design team has maintained one of the historic 4th floor office suites which includes a mural corridor that illustrates the history of the printing process, starting with Papyrus during the Ancient Egyptian period. The printing press room which is located on the Northwest corner remains and is targeted for commercial retail re-use, i.e. restaurant. Learning Objectives: Explore the historic preservation 3-part process and the importance of tax credits as it relates to the development of historic buildings.Recognize the preservation of the historically significant building that housed a prominent and current Milwaukee newspaper company.Learn about balancing the design of market rate units in a historic building.Identify the process of inserting a new lightwell into the center of an existing building.Face masks may be required - come prepared.
