Looking for dog that's good with children

Hello. I'm a single mom with 4 young daughters. We would love a dog. Not a puppy old enough to be house broken. One that also would bark if stranger would break in or if a knock on door. I recently had been assulted in my own home by a stranger and would feel better if we had a dog to alert us. Thank you.
