This is the true and amazing story of Ioannis Varvakis, Greece’s national benefactor during the1821 Revolutionary War years. Varvakis (Sebastian Koch) captured by the Turks and pardoned by Russian empress Catherine II (Catherine Deneuve), goes on to discover eatable fish eggs or Caviar! Wealthy, he becomes head of one of the largest mercantile empires in Europe, but never forgets his humble roots and the needs of Greece. Greek director Yannis Smaragdis has also made the critically acclaimed films, 1996's Kavafis and 2007's El Greco.
