MELROSE, MA — The Melrose Police Department says a Plymouth man is in custody after an incident with a hammer attack occurred at a Melrose construction site last month. Jeremiah Rhodes, 32, of Plymouth, was arrested and is facing charges of assault to murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon (hammer), and assault and battery. On Tuesday, Aug. 3, Melrose police were sent to 87 Essex Street for a report of an assault. While on the way to the scene, police learned the suspect had fled in a black Nissan, and the victim had escaped to the Dill's Court parking lot nearby. The victim of the assault was brought to a local hospital with head injuries resulting from being struck with a hammer. Officers immediately launched an investigation and learned Rhodes had been working at the construction site when the assault occurred following a disagreement between the two. A continued investigation brought in a warrant for Rhodes' arrest, and he was taken into custody Friday in Brockton after he was located at a residence there. With Melrose and Brockton police, Rhodes was subsequently transported to Malden District Court, where he is expected to be arraigned this afternoon.
