OSWEGO, IL — In its recent enforcement campaign for Labor Day, the Oswego Police Department issued 63 total tickets, including 16 for speeding, officials announced Friday. During the enforcement effort, which lasted from Aug. 20 through Sept. 7, police officers also wrote 43 citations for seat belt violations, three for distracted driving and one for driving with a suspended license. Oswego police were among 200 other local law enforcement agencies that carried out the Labor Day "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign that also encourages seat belt use. In 2019, the NHTSA reported 9,478 people were killed speeding, with 31 percent of men ages 15 to 20 involved in fatal crashes that year. Of the 22,215 car passengers who were killed in 2019, 47 percent of them weren't wearing seat belts, according to the NHTSA. In 2020, the department reported 90.3 percent of people wore seat belts in the country. The campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
