Description

I have a purebred German Shepherd needing rehomed which we have had since 9 weeks old. Greta is a 3 ½ year old purebred female German shepherd. She is smaller and approximately 60lbs. She is already fixed and all shots up to date. She is a very well loved and housetrained dog. She is an indoor dog, microchipped, good with other dogs and kids after getting to know them. She is used to a family of 6 with 13 and 11 year old girls, 9 year old boy, an infant girl (6wks old), my wife and I. She likes to bark and play with neighbor's boxer (dog), and when we are out of town she stays at a boarder with other dogs or with friends which have a full grown golden retriever. Sometimes he has to put her in her place though because she always wants to play. She's very high energy and a natural shepherd & only sits down once everyone else is, follows you/escorts you everywhere. Crate trained and underground fence yard collar trained. Beautiful great dog w/ basic training. Here is the problem… She needs someone with time for more training with socialization or someone who wants a front door protective dog or just someone who lives in different circumstances than us... We live on main Street in town and I am a pastor of said town and so we have a lot of unexpected visitors and foot traffic. Greta likes to bark at people until they are sniffed/known. This is not too bad of an issue except for when people come inside and the kids are supposed to tell them to wait a moment while they lock up the dog or wait for me to help with the dog, but instead they open the door and then Greta is in their face barking. Being a German shepherd this is very intimidating and being a small town pastor I need visitors to feel welcome stopping by anytime w/o fear of my dog. I have always feared that someone would get bit, but she has never growled or showed teeth in these instances. We have been working with her for these issues, and normally if I as head of house am there with her she is okay or if people come around back and she greets visitors in the yard, but it is the unexpected visitors which can be bad. She is generally good after she gets to sniff them and get to know them with adult owner present to show her it's okay. We also have neighbor and friend kids over a lot & some fear dogs & I do not want issues w/them. These issues may not be a problem for you at all as it would be a new home and/or not so many people always coming by to visit. I believe that Ideally she should go to country home or somewhere that does not have lots of unexpected visitors or someone that can spend more time and money training her, getting her better socialization skills with strangers. Greta is not a picky eater. She generally eats Sam's club Purina or pedigree food, sometimes kibble and bits. She does not generally eat till all the kids go to bed and house calms down. White rawhide bones make her stink. Loves a milk bone before bed. These are high value treats to her and she sometimes carries them around in mouth whining while looking for somewhere to hide them or finally decides to eat them. She is very well loved by the kids, and this will be very hard to do. I feel it is best she goes to someone who can give her more time, training, and socialization or more out to the country or someone with less unexpected strangers/visitors. She really is an awesome family dog! NO problems besides this front door protective instinct issue with strangers. NOTE: There will be a small adoption fee to ensure she is going to a good home. Also, this will help cover an XL Dog crate, high dollar name brand bark collar, and other dog accessories or needs. Please do not let this cause you to hesitate in contacting me, we can talk through this and options.
