COMMON MORALITY AND THE HELPING PROFESSIONS: A FRAMEWORK FOR ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING This ethics workshop discusses a framework for ethical decision-making based on Bernard Gert’s moral theory explicating the common moral system. Participants will be given a broad overview of moral theories (i.e. deontology, utilitarianism, principlism) that have most influenced social work and other helping professions’ approach to ethical decision making and the application of professional codes of ethics. The common moral framework will be applied in helping deepen our understanding of important ethical concerns related to acting paternalistically. Case examples will be used throughout. Sophia Counseling Center is a non-profit mental health provider and sponsored ministry of the Sylvania Sisters of St. Francis. Sophia is located on the campus of Lourdes University and serves as the Counseling Center for Lourdes Students Wednesdays with Sophia is a series of informational seminars and general student support sessions designed for college students and delivered by Sophia clinicians. Participation may assist students will their social-emotional well-being while navigating their busy, often stressful Student Life.
