Join fellow AIA Colorado South Section members for a construction tour in Colorado Springs. Join Christy Riggs, AIA, Project Architect for the dual-brand Element / SpringHill Hotel as she leads a construction tour of the project site. With a combined 259 guest rooms and suites, the hotel development is the first qualified Opportunity Zone (OZ) project in Colorado Springs. This Urban Renewal Authority project is within walking distance to area attractions including the U.S. Olympic Museum, Weidner Stadium, America the Beautiful Park, and the U.S. Olympic Committee Headquarters. The 295,000-square-foot hotel has 216 underground public parking spaces, street level retail, and a rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking Pikes Peak and the front range. The hotel will host 4,200 square feet of meeting and event space and will feature mountain views from the central business district in downtown Colorado Springs. This is an active construction site. Parking: meter parking on street near the site. Cascade Ave. tends to have more available spaces than Tejon. PPE: Please wear hard hat, safety vest, and closed-toed shoes Meeting Location: outside the construction trailer on the Northwest corner of the building Presenter: Christy Riggs, AIA, of 308 LLC is the Project Architect for the dual-brand hotel and will be leading the tour group. Safety: This is an active construction site, and there may be some stairs involved. Tour members need to be aware of their surroundings. Masks are required. Learning Objectives: Attendees will see many different types of construction, including pre-cast concrete, cast-in-place concrete, steel post and beam, pre-manufactured steel bearing walls, and light gauge framing as well as show how these different types of construction can work together.Understand the difference between posts and columns for fire rating construction methodsSee how pre-fabricated bearing walls are used and the type of coordination that is needed early in project design to use themUnderstand the code implications associated with Type 1B construction and what we did to keep heights down in order to not fall under high-rise building codes. Registration is required. All attendees must agree to the TERMS/Waiver and Release of Liability for Communicable Disease. AIA/CES HSW approved Construction Tours can be reported as AXP hours.
