NELSON Philadelphia Green Apple Day of Service October 9, 2021 @ George Sharswood Elementary School NELSON is proud to announce our continuous participation in Green Apple Day of Service which will take place on October 9th at the George Sharswood Elementary School. The event is sponsored by the Center for Green Schools, which is a division of the U.S. Green Building Council. It was established to drive the transformation of all schools into sustainable and healthy places to live, learn, work and play. This day of giving back allows parents, teachers, students, companies and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments through local service projects. Located at 2300 S. 2nd Street in South Philadelphia, the school’s mission is to be a facility that provides all students with the academic, technological & social skills needed to be productive & contributing citizens in our society. The students’ current playground is their concrete school yard, instead of pervious surfaces that are more forgiven. Our project for this school is improvement to a portion of the schoolyard to provide soft turf play areas and green spaces to create kid friendly areas for students to play and connect with nature. Project will include the following: • Renovate existing planter boxes and install durable native plants. • Build vertical trellis at each box for future climbing plants • Paint mural on wall between the two existing planter boxes • Build new planter boxes with vertical trellis at existing bike racks. • Provide soft turf at 15’ x 25’ concrete play area.
