VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles will start to take walk-ins at customer service center on select days starting on Oct. 5. Walk-in services come at the direction of the Virginia General Assembly. All 75 customer service centers will offer walk-in service and appointments on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Appointments only will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Walk-in service will be first come, first-served basis based on the type of transaction, but wait times should be expected. Hours will vary by location. "We are pleased to continue offering appointments in addition to walk-in service, since our customers greatly appreciate the convenience and efficiency appointments afford," said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb in a statement. "Those who can plan ahead should schedule an appointment for service but, if in-person assistance is needed urgently, walk-in service will now be available two and a half days per week." After the pandemic-related closure of customer service locations in March 2020, locations started reopened in mid-May 2020. Since then, the customer service locations have been operating by appointment only. Appointments are typically available to schedule within 90 days. The Virginia DMV has encouraged residents to use online and mail-in services when offered, and a majority of transactions during the pandemic have not been at customer service locations. Over 50 transactions are available through dmvNOW.com. One of the credentials that must be obtained in person is the REAL ID-compliant driver's license or photo ID due to documentation requirements. However, the federal government extended the deadline for REAL ID enforcement to May 3, 2023. On that date, REAL ID will be required to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility. A REAL ID will not be needed to board a domestic flight if you have another form of identification TSA accepts such as a U.S. passport. Overall, the DMV has conducted 10 percent more transactions through all channels of service than before the pandemic. For instance, there were 359,452 transactions in the week ending Sept. 4, compared to a pre-pandemic weekly average of 309,111. At customer service centers, customers are encouraged to wear a face mask, and lobby chairs will be spaced out.
