AUSTIN, TX — The city of Austin confirmed Wednesday it has yet to approve the special event permit for Austin City Limits Music Festival. The festival, which is set for Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 8-10, is scheduled to take place at Zilker Park in downtown Austin. Thousands of music enthusiasts flood to the event each year. This year's lineup will feature headliners George Straight and Miley Cyrus on Friday, Billie Eilish and Rufus Du Sol on Saturday and Duran Duran and Tyler, the Creator on Sunday. Although the festival's event permit has yet to be approved, officials say that is "normal." Live in Austin? City spokesperson Bryce Bencivengo told KUT these permits involve approval from dozens of departments and that, traditionally, final approval isn't given until a few weeks before the event. In late August, Austin updated its requirements for event permits on city property, saying large events must now require a negative COVID-19 from every attendee, regardless of vaccination status. ACL updated its policy on Aug. 19 stating it would require individuals to have a negative COVID-19 test before entering the festival; however, those who were fully vaccinated could show proof of vaccination in lieu of a negative test. It's unclear if that may need to change now that the city has updated its requirements. Bat Fest 2021 last month was also canceled for the same reason. While many are worried ACL may have the same fate, officials said the city is working to provide clarity soon on whether the festival could be canceled. C3 Presents, the organizer of the festival, hasn't indicated any plans to push off this year's in-person festival, though some Austinites have called for the festival's cancellation in light of the surge of cases in the Austin Metro.
