College Credits: Students Begin New School Year, Join Athletics

Students from area towns like Homer Glen, Lemont, Romeoville and Lockport are celebrating graduation, athletic accomplishments and beginning their college experience. Submitted by Dawn Virva Piper Virva, of Lockport and a graduate of Providence Catholic High School, graduated with high honors from the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. The following information was provided by Merit Pages News: Lockport's Kelly Earns Spot on 2021 UW-Whitewater Football Roster Quinn Kelly, of Lockport and graduate of Lockport Township High School, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team during the 2021 season, which won its first game, 46-7, against Carthage. Kelly, a freshman at UW-Whitewater, is an undeclared major. UW-Whitewater begins the seven-game Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with back-to-back home games on Oct. 2 against UW-Stout (Alumni Day) and Oct. 9 against UW-Platteville (Family Fest). The team hits the road for the next two weeks at ninth-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 16 and at UW-River Falls on Oct. 23. The Warhawks' Homecoming game will be played against UW-Eau Claire Oct. 30, and the team closes the regular season home slate Nov. 6 against UW-La Crosse on Shriners and Military Appreciation Day at Perkins Stadium. The regular season concludes Nov. 13 at UW-Stevens Point. University of Iowa Class of 2025 the most academic accomplished in UI history This fall, the University of Iowa welcomed the most academically accomplished class in its history for the fifth year in a row. The incoming undergraduate class again topped previous records in achievement with a higher average high school grade-point average, at 3.81, than any previous class. "We are very happy to welcome these newest Hawkeyes," says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost. "Like every incoming class, they bring fresh talents and perspectives to our campus. And like last year's class, they've already demonstrated tremendous resilience during a challenging time. We look forward to making sure they have the extraordinary opportunities they deserve, and supporting them as they pursue their goals." The Class of 2025 is composed of 4,521 students, up slightly from last year. About 19 percent of the class are first-generation students, and about 22 percent identify as African American, American Indian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, Asian, Latinx/a/o, or two or more ethnicities. About 60 percent of the class are Iowa residents, and about 1 percent are international students. The class represents 94 of Iowa's 99 counties, 45 U.S. states and territories (as well as Washington, D.C., and bases for the U.S. Armed Forces), and 40 countries. The newest undergraduate class includes: Angelina Bohde of Homer Glen, Dawson Crowley of Homer Glen, Savannah Downing of Romeoville, Emma Harris of Homer Glen, Liam Horan of Homer Glen, Grace Marino of Homer Glen, Ryan O'Neil of Lockport, Jayden Prince of Lockport, Jake Sojka of Homer Glen, Elizabeth Barton of Lemont, Lilia DeSantis of Lemont, Jack Manalli of Lemont, Margaret Militello of Lemont, and Connor Stomp of Lemont.
