LAGUNA BEACH, CA — On Saturday, Sept. 11, Laguna Beach's Fire Department will have a limited presence at the Semper Memento installation in Heisler Park, the city says.
The 9/11 memorial, at Monument Point in Heisler Park, sits on a base that resembles the Pentagon building. An interior planter is a remembrance of the field in Pennsylvania, and it is braced by two I-beams recovered from the World Trade Center building wreckage.
Rich Kane, Patch Staff Photo "A mirror-polished stainless steel sphere in the center reflects the world, allowing individuals to see themselves, and become part of the memorial," Jorg Dubin, the sculptor, explained in 2011.
A live, virtual ceremony will take place on Facebook on the City of Laguna Beach's page, starting at 8:45 a.m.
The remembrance ceremony will coincide with the actual times of the attack, beginning at 8:46 a.m., the city says.
As in previous years, the public is invited to attend—in person or virtually— this brief service honoring the 2,996 lives that were lost, including 343 New York City Firefighters, 37 Police Officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and 23 New York City Police Officers.
Following the timeline of that morning, 20 years ago, a county-wide radio broadcast will commemorate the attacks starting at 9:03 a.m.
Watch the virtual ceremony in Laguna Beach on their Facebook page.
