Volunteer Title: Docent Status: Part time Volunteer - At least one 3-4 hour shift per month Description: Welcome and engage guests who visit the Museum. Essential Functions: Greet guests to the Museum. Describe Museum exhibits and artifacts. Relate the history of Job Carr and Old Town. Provide information about the Oregon Trail and life in early Tacoma. Effectively engage individuals and families in conversation and answer questions. Promote local and regional tourism by providing information on other museums and points of interest. Prepare Museum for opening and closing, if Museum staff is not present. Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with visitors of various ages and backgrounds. Ability to be a good ambassador representing the Museum and the City of Tacoma. Enthusiasm for and interest in local history. Must be able to work independently. Volunteers with experience in customer service, teaching and history are strongly encouraged to apply. Must be reliable, including excellent attendance, promptness and courteous behavior. Maintain a neat, professional appearance. Availability for at least one 3-4 hour shift per month. During the month of September the Museum is looking for docents on Friday's between the hours of 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. 3 p.m. Please note these hours may adjust after September, 2021. The Museum welcomes volunteers of all ages, interests and skill levels. The growing segment of our older population is vital to strengthening our communities through their interest in helping others. Our focus is to incorporate meaningful volunteer opportunities that provide purpose and a way to give back to the community. Current RSVP volunteer positions include local food banks, congregate meal sites, non-profit thrift stores (shopping assistants, sorters, warehouse assistant, truck assistants, retail assistants, assemble furniture in a fully equipped build shop), administrative/clerical assistants, reading/enrichment/tutoring/ mentorship groups and success coaches, construction volunteers (no experience required),, throughout the Greater Tacoma, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, Graham and Lakewood area. We are continually bringing on new and unique volunteer opportunities.
