The Afghan War in Retrospect (Royal Oak) Some of you have forgotten why we sent troops to Afghanistan in the first place, the reason was the Taliban and their jihadist mentality allowed Al Qaeda to plan and stage their attack on the US resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans and hundreds of billions in financial loss. Our troops chased out Al Qaeda and toppled the Taliban government for nearly 20 years. The wisdom of trying to create a modern society there is up for debate but few can successfully argue the average everyday Afghan didn't enjoy the freedoms and opportunities our US presence afforded them. It's clear to me where we went wrong was allowing Pakistan to give shelter and aid to the Taliban that allowed them to survive waiting for a weak President like Biden to be in charge who's only goal was to remove our troops at any costs. Arguing that staying in Afghanistan was a pointless gesture ignores the fact that by remaining it denied jihadists a country to operate from freely as well as maintaining a forward base in that part of the world to monitor and if need be confront Russia and China as well as Iran who are no friends of ours or any freedom loving people. We have been in Germany, Japan & S. Korea for more than 70 years helping to keep the peace not only for these countries but for the World at large and over that time American military have died in doing so therefore the 20 years in Afghanistan is not only not unusual but neither extraordinary. Controlling Bagram Air Force base and a few thousand soldiers in country kept the Taliban and other terrorists at bay on the outskirts which was important to do but if we were to leave entirely letting the Afghans fend for themselves the way Biden did it was horrendous and absolutely the wrong headed. Our government both Republican and Democrat for a long time hid the truth about the status of the Afghan military leading us to believe they could withstand the Taliban on their own. They also failed to inform us just how involved Pakistan was nurturing the Taliban keeping them an effective fighting and political force. When you add we left more than enough advanced military to supply hundreds of thousands of soldiers for years to come it's simply boggles the mind how insane that action was. No doubt Biden inherited a precarious situation that as Senator and VP he helped to create and perpetuate but it doesn't validate what he's done as President. Our military has about 150,000 troops stationed around the world primarily in Germany, Japan and S.Korea, 2,500 in Afghanistan to keep the peace as well as a buffer against China, Russia and Iran was worth it. Demanding soldiers never die in forward bases is unrealistic especially when their mission saves lives both at home and where they're stationed. That layer of protection has been removed by Biden and knowing how brutal the Taliban is to Afghans more than likely tens of thousands will die in the weeks, months and years to come and every 7th century thinking jihadist will have a safe homeland to operate and plan attacks not only at us but the World in general. Adding insult to injury Biden ordered our military to evacuate well over 100,000 Afghans approximately 20 to 30 percent we haven't a clue who they are while leaving hundred of Americans behind and excusing his absurd orders by claiming many many Americans simply didn't want to leave even with advanced warning. No rational American would want to stay in Afghanistan if the Taliban was taking over and since only a few days before we left any of us knew they were, its an insult to our intelligence for Biden and his Administration to suggest those that remained did so because they were too lazy to leave in time. We can equate the Taliban to the Nazis and no sane person would want to be under the control of the Nazis if they could leave. The incompetence of Biden, Blinken, the State Dept, and our military is so bad that now coupled with Biden's failures to control covid, the catastrophe at our Souther border his approval rating is down to an alarming 39%.
