The purpose of memorializing the MAAFA is to pay homage to the Ancestors, acknowledge the lingering effects of slavery and racism and create a community dialogue in order to develop a healing program and process. This year’s theme is “Mentacide: The Psychological Impact of Slavery.” The day will consist of a MAAFA ceremony(prayer, libation, poetry, drumming and more); the unveiling of the Maafa Mobile Exhibit; and a community presentation and discussion on the mental ills of slavery/racism and how to heal and move forward. Baba Aundar Maat, founder and organizer of the event, says, “Only the truth can set us free from the ill effects of slavery. The healing begins when we acknowledge the pain and the origin of the dis-ease.
