Description

Marlanda Dekine Live Poetry Reading and Ancestry Workshop Marlanda Dekine-Sapient Soul (she/they), the 2021 winner of the New Southern Voices Poetry Prize, will read poems from their first collection, i am from a punch & a kiss, and their current works in progress and conduct an open interactive workshop. Marlanda's work invites you to experience Plantersville, South Carolina through their Gullah Geechee experience. Their work will encourage others to journey into their own memory and personal ancestry in the workshop portion of the evening. Questions, silliness, frustration, randomness, and the mundane are all allowed. No experience with laughter, speaking, or writing is required. All are welcome The Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies examines the historical migration and scattering of African populations to local geographical areas and the subsequent evolution of blended cultures, specifically Gullah. CCU’s location at the northern tip of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor puts it in a unique position for diaspora study and research. The work of the institute provides students with experiential learning opportunities, both at home and abroad, that center on interconnections among local, national and global peoples and their societies.
