CONNECTICUT — The coronavirus infection rate took a sharp, albeit one-day, climb, in the latest data released from the state Department of Public Health. Connecticut's daily coronavirus positivity rate rose nearly a point overnight, to 3.51 percent. An additional 935 residents tested positive for the virus, out of 26,603 tests performed. A year-and-a-half into the coronavirus pandemic, it's clear that COVID-19 has been particularly devastating among non-white communities. The latest data from DPH show the age-adjusted coronavirus COVID-19 death rate for non-Hispanic mixed race residents to be nearly five times that of the state's white population. Coronavirus-associated hospitalizations have risen sharply since the beginning of July and the initial spread of the delta variant, but have leveled off somewhat since the last of August. Overnight, DPH reported one additional hospitalization, bringing the state total as of Wednesday to 364 beds. Of those 364 residents recently hospitalized, over 24 percent have been fully vaccinated. Hartford and New Haven Counties lead with the most residents hospitalized by the virus, with 108 and 103 beds, respectively.
