Heroic Rescue By Arlington Officer Honored By VA Police Chiefs

ARLINGTON, VA — An Arlington police officer's heroic effort in stopping a handcuffed man from being struck by a Metro train was recognized by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation (VACP), according to blog post. After Cpl. Douglas Bennett arrested a suspect in an armed robbery on Dec. 30, 2019, he and the suspect were standing on the platform at the Courthouse Metro Station. The suspect suddenly bolted toward the tracks and an oncoming train. Bennett, who was between the suspect and the tracks, managed to pull the suspect to the ground, even while the suspect was fighting him, and prevented the suspect from being hit by the train. The suspect was uninjured and later taken to jail. In recognition of Bennett's quick thinking and heroism, VACP presented him with the Award for Valor on Aug. 23, at its annual meeting in Williamsburg. On August 23, the @vachiefs presented Corporal D. Bennett with the Association's highest honor, the Award for Valor, for heroism displayed in the face of an imminent threat.
