HOUSTON, TX — With the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks coming Saturday, Americans everywhere will reflect on the events of that September morning in 2001. Here are several tributes, commemorations and events around Houston being held this weekend to honor people who lost their lives in the attacks. 20 Years Later: UH Commemorates 9/11: The University of Houston community and the public are invited to attend a series of events on the first floor of the Student Center South on Friday hosted by UH Veteran Services. A photo timeline exhibit of the attacks will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and UH will host a remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m., followed by a reception at 10 a.m. Visitors also can see the World Trade Center Memorial and Reflection Garden just outside the Student Center South Theater entrance. 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride at Active Passion: Starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, the ride begins and ends at Active Passion in the Heights and will take participants to Lauren's Garden in downtown's Market Square Park. The garden is named for Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, a native Houstonian who was a passenger on Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against their hijackers. 9/11 Heroes Run at Houston City Hall: The Travis Manion Foundation is hosting its annual run to honor the sacrifices of the heroes of 9/11. The run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, and registration begins at $35. 9/11 20th Anniversary Commemoration at Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park: The Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission and the Conroe Fire Department are hosting an event with ceremonies and moments of silence that coincide with the timeline of the attacks 20 years ago. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. 9/11 Commemoration at Market Square Park: Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will speak at this commemoration in the heart of downtown Houston. Event starts at 8:30 a.m. 9/11 2oth Anniversary Exhibit at Houston Fire Museum: The Houston Fire Museum is currently closed for building preservation, but its doors are opening Saturday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. An exhibit featuring a piece of steel from the World Trade Center as well as archival photographs from the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York will be on display from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged to help with the preservation project. Never Forget: Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 at Lone Star Flight Museum: First responders and their families, up to four people, get into the museum free Saturday and Sunday. The 9/11 exhibit, which runs through Jan. 2, 2022, lists the names of all 2,977 people who died in the attacks. On Saturday, the museum will host or show several presentations and discussions featuring first-hand survivor accounts. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and noon-5 p.m. on Sunday. 9/11 20th Anniversary at Katy VFW Post 9182: Past and present Post Commanders will be guest speakers at the event. A poem and laying of wreaths will honor those who died in the attacks. The event starts at 10 a.m. Patriot Day of Remembrance at The Woodlands Fire Department Central Station: The Woodlands Fire Department is hosting a ceremony to honor the brave men and women who tragically lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The ceremony begins at 7:30 a.m. First Responders Day at Town Green Park: The Woodlands invites residents to a community gathering to remember and thank first responders featuring a presentation of colors, honor guard, speakers, live music, food vendors and more. The event is from 3-6 p.m.
