AUSTIN, TX — The 40th annual Pecan Street Festival has been canceled after the city of Austin denied the festival's special event permit due to COVID-19. Festival organizers announced the cancelation in a Facebook post on Wednesday. The event was scheduled to take place Sept. 18 and 19 on 24-blocks of Sixth Street in downtown Austin. "We have done everything in our power to push forward with a physical festival, but believe our vendor and attendee's safety takes precedence over anything," the post said. "This gives us an opportunity to come back with a complete Pecan Street Festival experience for the 2022 season." Officials said Pecan Fest has been a "staple in the Austin community" for over 40 years. Each year, the event celebrates more than 300 artists and original artisans in downtown Austin. Somethings people look forward to each year are the three stages of live music, a variety of ethnic and regional food, children's workshops, a petting zoo, magical shows and more. Pecan Fest isn't the only in-person event to be canceled due to the city denying a special event permit. In August, Austin's Bat Fest was canceled days before its scheduled event as a result of the city denying its permit. Officials had said the city, Austin police and fire had already approved its site and COVID-19 Safety Plan. Live in Austin?
