KITTERY, ME — Construction began Wednesday on a massive project to better service the U.S. Navy's attack submarines at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The U.S. Navy said in a news release that the project, which costs $1.7 billion, will take seven years to complete. As the Portsmouth shipyard is 221 years old, these upgrades are needed to service the Navy's Los Angeles- and Virginia-class submarines, the Navy said. The project will "increase the shipyard's capacity to maintain, modernize, and repair the Navy's attack submarines and return them to the fleet on time," according to the news release from the Navy. Construction involves an addition to Dry Dock 1 and new floors, walls, pump systems, and other utilities. The Navy has committed to upgrading all four public shipyards in the U.S., which are located at Norfolk, Pearl Harbor, Portsmouth, and Puget Sound.
