PITTSBURGH, PA — The apparent stalemate over a contract extension appears to be over. Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt appears poised to become the NFL's highest paid defensive player, according to multiple reports.
Watt is expected to sign a four-year deal worth $112 million within the next 24 hours. In a break from tradition, $80 million of the contract will be guaranteed, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
More on today's breaking news: The #Steelers are signing star TJ Watt to a 4-year, more than $112M extension that broke precedent including the kind of fully guaranteed money -- $80M!! -- they have never given out. pic.twitter.com/i6tZLspKZH— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 9, 2021 Despite having one year left on his current contract, Watt has been a limited participant in training camp while negotiations for the new pact seemingly stalled. He returned to full practice on Wednesday.
The Steelers open the season on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
