Here are the top stories in Duluth today: Starting tonight at 9 PM, the Georgia Department of Transportation will be having nightly lane closures on Highway 20 between Buford and Lawrenceville. The construction is expected to last about 90 days. With patching and resurfacing the project should be complete sometime in April 2022. If you have a nightly commute, make sure to be as safe as possible going this direction during the construction. (Atlanta Journal Constitution) Georgia 811, a Duluth-based safe digging company, has announced its new executive vice president of operations. Brian Gilliam will oversee all 811 operations, planning, organizing, and providing development and implementation of efficient operations. Way to go, Mr. Gilliam! (Paywall: Gwinnettdailypost.com) The Georgia Department of Education recently recognized 11 Gwinnett schools for being in the top 5% of schools with substantial student performance growth. One of the 11 schools was our very own, Sweetwater Middle School! (Atlanta Journal Constitution) When Dr. Calvin Watts had his first State of the Schools address on Wednesday, he made it abundantly clear that the business community needs to join what he called "Team Gwinnett" so that our schools can feel more connected to the community. The connection to the Gwinnett community was a big talking point for Dr. Watts at the luncheon, but he also wants the business community to know that our school district has 97% of all students back in schools, and that is an effect of the school district and the business community working together.
