Description
Last July, I got Cooper when I swapped my former Ratsnake for him in a situation that was intended to be mutual benefit. (Cooper was known to be a Biter who needed handling; my snake was reserved but handled well.) In the exchange, his former owner got my healthy, young Ratsnake. I was told that he had just eaten a large meal and that was why his belly had a bulge. I accepted the explanation, took him home and waited for his meal to digest. All the while, he behaved normally during handling and was surprisingly active. I’ve had him outside exercising in a bush several times. He loves to be concealed in dappled sunlight, feeling breezes and exploring slowly but methodically. After 4-6 weeks, I realized that his belly bulge indicates an internal medical problem. It may be a cyst, inflammation or other. Cooper needs medical attention and follow-up. * He has eaten recently, however, and continues to demonstrate no sign of pain or discomfort when handled or exploring. * Our household has spent thousands of dollars in special needs costs for a One In A Million cat who recently died. Getting proper medical care for reptiles is entirely different, however. My reptile veterinarian on Mill Plain Avenue no longer accepts reptiles. I was steered instead to two locations specializing in reptiles: Newberg Critter Cabana (private Vet available) Beaverton Scale & Tails (private Vet available) I live/work in Vancouver, so the Interstate bridge & commute issues are a major problem. I found that scheduling an appointment when I can avoid traffic snarls would take weeks. Or, pay a $140, on-call emergency fee. I’m seeking a new Keeper/Steward near Beaverton or Newberg who will take Cooper into your home for proper medical care. Scheduling a manual examination may be all that is needed to find the cause and suggested fix. (Veterinarian or has access to an experienced reptile veterinarian?) With his distinct “railroad tracks” belly markings and other Mojave Desert traits, he’s a One In A Million snake. In time, with proper treatment, Cooper will become a delightful animal companion for the Right person. He comes with a 40-gallon terrarium with locking screen lid – exclusively for HIS use. (Corner of Hazel Dell Ave / 99th Street near Dutch Brothers Coffee/Grocery Outlet)
