Description

The opening celebrations begin at the Hempsted Houses featuring the Latin Essence Jazz Group! As COVID-19 continues to impact the state, Connecticut Landmarks is speaking with artists about their pandemic experiences and how they have stayed connected to their communities and forged new bonds in challenging times. Celebrate the launch of temporary outdoor exhibits with performances by local artists at the Hempsted Houses in New London, and the Butler-McCook House & Garden in Hartford. On Sunday, September 19th the opening celebrations begin at the Hempsted Houses featuring the Latin Essence Jazz Group. The Latin Essence Jazz Group combines elements of traditional Latin music and rhythms with an eclectic repertoire of jazz standards and pop/fusion classics. Participating New London artists include Poet Laureate Josh "AnUrbanNerd" Brown, Stephanie Gerald, James Hunter, Aly Maderson Quinlog, Ben Velazquez and Draya Wilbur. The artists will be selling their art (CDs, poetry, art) and one will lead a zine making activity. Admission is free, donations welcome to support programming at Connecticut Landmarks’ Hempsted Houses. Registration is required; same-day on-site registration will be allowed only if the event has not reached capacity. In the event of inclement weather, the launch will be held on Sunday, September 26th from 2 to 4 pm. In order to protect the health of our staff, visitors, and community, all visitors must wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines when moving to and from the property entrance to their lawn space. Children should remain with their adult(s) during the event. Supported by the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, this project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services [CAGML-248024-OMLS-20]. On Saturday, September 25th the festivities launch at the Butler-McCook House & Garden in Hartford with Ghazi Omair & Friends (feat. DJ Z-Rex). Register at https://CTL-Lemons-For-Lemonade-Hartford.eventbrite.com. Connecticut Landmarks uses historic properties to inspire an understanding of our complex past.
