Hazelwood Platoon is partnering with the Pittsburgh Pirates and local organization involveMINT to continue building a Food Recycling Site. In support of the national initiative- Beyond 9/11: Operation Enduring Service, a campaign marking the 20th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, The Mission Continues is hosting service projects across the country! Hazelwood Platoon is partnering with the Pittsburgh Pirates and local organization involveMINT to continue building a Food Recycling Site on Sylvan Ave. September 15th is recognized as Clemente Day and a day of service for the Pirates. Roberto Clemente Day was established by Major League Baseball to honor the legacy of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. In his honor, MLB annually presents the Roberto Clemente Award to recognize the player who best represents the game of Baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contributions, both on and off the field. On site at the Sylvan Ave Food Recycling Site, we will help to clear brush, mend fences and assemble a shed with involveMINT staff to continue beautification of their food recycling site. The end goal is a community supported and run food recycling site and garden space. involveMINT is the host organization of Pittsburgh’s local currency. Its mission is to catalyze resources through Community Exchange Networks to enable communities affected by systemic challenges and inequalities to transform into vibrant, healthy, and thriving places.
