Milford 9/11 Memorial Will Also Help Homeless Vets

MILFORD, MA — A ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks will be held this weekend in Milford and will offer a chance for residents to give back to veterans. The Saturday memorial event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Milford Town Hall and feature a flag tower by the fire department, music by Shanna Jackman, bag pipes and a place to properly dispose of worn American flags. The Milford-based charity Thanks To Yanks — founded in 2006 to help soldiers who served following the 9/11 attacks — will also be at the event collecting items for homeless veterans. The drive is seeking items like socks, underwear, toiletries, backpacks and gift cards to local fast-food restaurants and supermarkets. Founder Michael Shain said in late August the group and the owner of local Dunkin' stores sent coffee overseas to U.S. Army special forces soldiers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the 9/11 attacks, including one Milford resident. Herbert Homer, 48, worked for a defense contract management agency and was on United Flight 175. That airliner hit the south tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03 a.m.
