Press release from The Fellowcraft Club of Annawon Lodge: Sept. 7, 2021 The Fellowcraft Club of Annawon Lodge No. 115 A.F. & A.M. in West Haven was pleased to present its annual award of excellence scholarship to this year's recipient, West Haven High School Senior, Mackenzie Gardner. Mackenzie was selected unanimously by the Fellowcraft Club Board from a pool of well deserving candidates. Fellowcraft president, Joseph F. McVety Jr, said "Mackenzie really impressed me with her diverse list of achievements. Excelling not just academically, but also in her extracurricular activities, including various sports and clubs. Giving back to the community is a fundamental value in Freemasonry. Mackenzie's commitment to her community stood out to me especially. Mackenzie is the epitome of what a true 'Westie' should be. The Fellowcraft Club Award of Excellence was founded in 2007 and since then has been given annually to an eligible High School Senior who resides in West Haven. Freemasonry is the oldest fraternal organization in the world. It is dedicated to promoting improvement in the character of its members. A mason is taught to be a good citizen, to be of good character, to care for those less fortunate, and to give back to his community. Freemasonry traces its roots to the Middle Ages. It is from associations of stone masons who built the magnificent buildings of Europe that the fraternity started. These groups, eventually, began to accept members who were not actual working masons. At that time, they adopted the term "Accepted" Masons, and Freemasonry was born. Annawon Lodge has been a community pillar in West Haven since they were chartered on June 16th 1873. Many of West Haven's most recognizable names have been members.
