CANTON, MA - The Canton Board of Health will meet jointly with the Canton Select Board on Thursday, September 9 at the Tavern Room at Pequitside Farms to discuss current COVID-19 trends and the implementation of the universal indoor mask policy last week. The in-person meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Tavern Meeting Room at 79 Pleasant Street. At last week's Select Board meeting, Select Board Clerk Thomas Theodore called for a joint meeting with the BOH over concerns about the new mask policy. The Board of Health announced last Monday afternoon that masks will be required in all indoor settings unless a health condition precludes people from wearing them. "The mandate requires all individuals over the age of two to wear a face covering in all indoor public spaces, houses of worship and private spaces open to the public except where an individual is unable to tolerate a face covering due to a medical condition or disability," according to a press release issued last week. "The mandate does not limit activities. Nor does it place any new spacing requirements or capacity limits on these locations." Theodore said he was upset by the lack of advanced notice of the policy change and the effect it will have on Canton's businesses. "The mandate, I think, was done without thinking things out," he said at last week's Select Board meeting. "Just to throw something out overnight is unfair to everybody. " "Common sense would say that you have a meeting and invite the business people in," added Select Board member John Connolly, who voted with Theodore. "This is going to hurt them right where it hurts the most." He made a motion requesting a delay of the policy's implementation, but it failed in a 3-2 vote. The Board of Health's next meeting will be held on Monday, October 4 in Canton Town Hall's Salah Meeting Room at 6 p.m.
