EAST HAVEN, CT — Tuesday, an East Haven woman and a child were stabbed, police said. Now, police have made an arrest. According to East Haven Police Department Capt. Joseph M. Murgo, in the early morning hours Tuesday, officers were dispatched to a Foxon Boulevard address after the East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 911 hang-up. While enroute, dispatch told officers that a woman could be heard on an open line yelling for help in the background before the line disconnected. When police got there, a female victim was found suffering from stab wounds to her arm and upper chest area. And police found that a juvenile on scene was also suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds to his hand. The East Haven Fire Department treated both victims on scene before being transported to the hospital for further treatment. None of the injuries were life threatening. Murgo said that an argument began after the victim told her husband, later identified as Jose Montero, 43, that he could not use her vehicle in the middle of the night. Murgo said there was a "struggle" after Montero found his wife's keys, which he said continued until Montero got to her car. The man then "brandished a knife" once the victim tried to get into her car to stop him from leaving. "During this struggle, both the female victim and the juvenile were injured by the knife," Murgo said. Montero took off in the car. Murgo said that while officers were on the scene, they found and seized a firearm which had been reported stolen out of West Haven. At around 3 a.m. while officers were paroling, they saw Montero in his wife's car going northbound on Highland Avenue and tried to stop the car but Montero sped away and led them police on a chase into New Haven, Murgo said. Montero eventually crashed at the intersection of Rossette and Button streets while trying to negotiate a turn, Murgo said. He was taken into custody after a struggle with officers. An inventory of the vehicle prior to it being towed from the scene led to the discovery of the knife used in the incident. Montero was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital as a precaution due to the accident, Murgo said, adding Montero was released soon after and was taken to the East Haven Police Department for processing. Montero was charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace, risk of injury to a minor, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, criminal possession of a firearm, engaging in a police pursuit and interfering with police. Montero was held on a $250,000.00 bond.
