HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A new six-court indoor squash club will open in November in Howard County. The 13,000-square-foot Columbia Squash and Athletic Club at 9315 Snowden River Parkway will help private schools that can't find courts for school teams. "This facility in central Howard County effectively closes a huge gap in squash facilities between Baltimore and Northern Virginia and takes advantage of the emerging groups of participants in the entire region," owner Jay Naseem said. "The recent closing of the Meadow Mill Athletic Club eliminated 14 courts from Baltimore. It highlights the need for high-quality facilities. The sport is being discovered by all kinds of people every day because of the physical and mental health benefits it provides." The Columbia facility also will feature a state-of-the-art fitness center and massage area available to all players, as well as the families of younger participants. The site will include player access to the "Play Squash Academy," a program that targets juniors and staffed by internationally recognized coaches such as Nouran El Torky, an Egyptian-born professional squash player, Victor Garcia from Mexico, Zahab Khan and Usmar Hassan from Pakistan, veteran Pro Hunt Richardson and Naseem himself, who also hails from Pakistan. "Our coaching is designed to train select players to compete at the collegiate and professional levels, so we would not be surprised to work with juniors from up to 250 miles who want access to our coaches," Naseem added. "That is among the reasons why we have selected a facility that offers convenient connections to major highways."
