NEW HAMPSHIRE—Good afternoon! Today is apparently National Ampersand Day, a day to celebrate the "&" sign or even check it out as an artistic medium.
Why is it called an ampersand, you may ask? Ampersand Art explains the "&" sign used to be the last letter of the English alphabet! When kids recited their alphabet, they would add the amepersand "per se," or by itself, after "z." If you say "and, per se, &" fast enough, maybe you can see why this character got the name ampersand.
Theoretically, you could also use the symbol to spell words like "h&ndsome" or "brig&." I'm not sure if this is an exciting enough fact to share at the dinner table, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Here are some top stories from around New H&shire (that doesn't really work, does it?):
Top teacher: A teacher in Exeter was named the state's History Teacher of the Year. Jacob Goodwin teaches sixth grade at Exeter Cooperative Middle School. This means he is up for recognition as the National History Teacher of the Year later this year.
Fatal motorcycle crash: A Manchester man died Wednesday morning when his motorcycle hit a box truck on I-93. State troopers have identified him as Sean MacDonald, 28.
9/11 remembrance: Several New Hampshire communities have scheduled memorials on Saturday for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. If there is a community I missed, please email me the information at [email protected].
Missing persons website: New Hampshire is releasing a monthly report of missing people in the state. Currently, there are 66 missing persons cases in the state.
