PITTSBURGH, PA — Six city park sites will be illuminated during the first weekend of October as part of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy's 25th anniversary celebration. The event, to be held Oct. 1 and 2, will include free block parties with live music, food vendors and family-friendly activities.
On Oct. 1, block parties will be held from 6-9 p.m. in the Mellon Park walled garden, the Patricia Rooney Memorial Fountain in Allegheny Commons Park, and Schenley Plaza. The Oct. 2 celebrations will occur 6-9 p.m. celebrations in August Wilson Park, McKinley Park, and the Frick Environmental Center.
All six parks will be illuminated both evenings, and each community party will reflect their respective neighborhoods, conservancy officials said.
"In previous years we've held gala celebrations to honor conservancy milestones,"said Catherine Qureshi, conservancy president and chief executive officer.
"Due to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, we thought it would be best to create an event that welcomes all Pittsburghers to safely join us in celebrating 25 years of making Pittsburgh's beloved green spaces shine, by actually lighting them up."
The conservancy did not reveal how much the event will cost in a release announcing it. The organization was the driving force behind a referendum narrowly approved by city voters in 2019 that established a tax to help fund city parks. The tax hike costs property owners $50 for every $100,000 of assessed real estate value.
