ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Hospital's parent company, Edward-Elmhurst Health, revealed plans Wednesday to merge with NorthShore University HealthSystem, pending regulatory approval. The chains include nine hospitals and more than 300 outpatient facilities throughout the area. When completed, the combined organization will include 25,000 employees, serving an area with more than 4.2 million residents, according to a news release. Naperville-based Edward-Elmhurst and Evanston-based NorthShore expect to close on the transaction later this year. The new organization, consisting of the NorthShore and Edward-Elmhurst regions, will be led by J.P. Gallagher as president and CEO, according to the news release. Gallagher became president and CEO of NorthShore in 2017. Mary Lou Mastro, president and CEO of Edward-Elmhurst Health, is expected to join the executive team of the new organization, maintaining leadership as CEO of the Edward-Elmhurst region, which includes the Elmhurst and Naperville hospitals. The organizations also announced the creation of two community investment funds, with each organization committing $100 million to their respective communities, according to the news release. The money will generate millions of dollars in annual interest that will be used to make a direct impact, the hospital chains said.
