ELMHURST, IL — In the last few days, Elmhurst police have handled cases involving disputes over cars, the relinquishing of a FOID card, stolen catalytic converters, the hacking of a local firm's email, retail theft, a tire slashing and an airsoft shooting. Here is information from the latest police reports: Disputes over cars A car with severe front-end damage was found about 8 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot near the tennis courts at Elmhurst University, 190 Prospect Ave. Villa Park police contacted the car's owner, who said her daughter took the car without permission. Villa Park police towed the car to their station for an investigation. A resident in the 400 block of St. Charles Road told police Wednesday that her son took her car without her permission. The resident's son is homeless and suffers from drug abuse, but she let him stay at her house for a few days. She has made multiple attempts to contact her son, to no avail. The case is pending an investigation. Retail theft Police received a call about a retail theft about 11:30 p.m. Friday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. A man was seen in the stockroom placing several bottles of alcohol in a shopping cart. Someone confronted the man, and he left in a white Buick Rendezvous. Villa Park police stopped the suspect vehicle, and the driver was brought in and charged with transportation of open alcohol. The suspect in the store is still at large, described as black, 6 feet, having an average build, having dreadlocks, and wearing a dark shirt and light blue jeans. Gun relinquished A police officer went to get a firearm owner's identification, or FOID, card from a resident in the 400 block of West Third Avenue. The resident relinquished it, and it was sent to the state police. Converters stolen A catalytic converter was stolen from a car between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Elmhurst University, 190 S. Prospect Ave. Converters were also stolen from cars over the weekend in the 100 block of Pine Street, the 100 block of North Haven Road, and the Metra parking lot at Park and Arlington avenues. The metals in catalytic converters have become a lot more valuable in the last year. Business email hacked The business email at the Malecki Brooks law firm, 205 E. Butterfield Road, was hacked Aug. 24, leading to an unauthorized transfer. Laptop falls off A driver told police Thursday that he drove away from Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., with his laptop on top of the car. He believes it fell off at some point between there and Elmhurst University. Tire slashing A tire of a car was slashed between 8 p.m. Friday and 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Clara Place. The owner said he did not want to sign a complaint. Hoop stolen A basketball hoop was stolen between 9:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday from a driveway in the 600 block of North Walnut Street. Fugitive drivers An officer saw a car driving on its rim about 3:30 a.m. Sunday near York and Butterfield. The officer tried to stop the car, but the driver sped away, heading east on Butterfield. Another agency found the car abandoned in Bellwood. It was towed away. An investigation is pending. An officer tried to stop a car with tinted windows and no front registration about 7 p.m. Monday near North and Indiana. The driver sped away, heading east on North. Airsoft shooting A resident in the 300 block of Holly Avenue told police she heard something hitting the back of her house repeatedly Sunday night and found hundreds of pellets around her patio doors. The house was not damaged, and she did not want to sign a complaint. A person relinquished his airsoft pellet guns and asked the officers to have the items destroyed. The pellet guns and pellets were placed into evidence for destruction. Bike theft An unlocked blue Schwinn mountain bicycle was stolen about 7 p.m. Monday from an open attached garage in the 600 block of Saylor Avenue. One of the suspects left his smaller Huffy BMX bicycle in the parkway in front of a neighbor's house. The Huffy was described as being in "junk condition." One of the suspects was described as white and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a blue face mask, a red backpack and light colored pants. The other one was described as white and wearing a black sweatshirt and gray pants. Fraud A person in the 400 block of North York Street told police Wednesday that a man requested she provide her Social Security number and her banking information. She was advised by police to contact credit agencies and place a freeze on her credit.
