CARLSBAD, CA — The National Safety Council, a nonprofit road safety advocacy group, gave awards to eight Carlsbad-area mail carriers for long records of accident-free driving.
Five carriers from the Carlsbad main post office and three from the U.S. Postal Service's La Costa station received the council's Million Mile plaques for driving either 1 million miles or 30 years without preventable incidents, according to a Postal Service news release.
"The years go by quickly," said Lydia Navarro, one of the eight winners and a 32-year Postal Service worker who has worked for 28 years in Carlsbad. "I just always remember to focus on working safely," Navarro said in a statement.
Carlsbad post office Supervisor Christina Hammond called the eight people's safety records "incredible achievements and a tribute to their professionalism."
The Illinois-based National Safety Council aims to roll back the country's major causes of preventable death, with a focus on roads and workplaces.
