CHARLOTTE, NC — The tenth annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb honoring fallen first responders is set for Saturday in uptown Charlotte. This year, 560 participants representing 83 teams will climb 110 floors at Truist Field, a height that equals each of the World Trade Center Towers. The event is expected to raise $37,000 in donations, $12,000 more than the original goal. The Sept. 11 event will begin at 7 a.m. with opening ceremonies. The climb begins at 9 a.m. Truist Field is located at 324 South Mint Street in Charlotte. Say organizers: "Participants will climb to honor the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement personnel and 10 EMS personnel lost during the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks. Climbers complete this as a tribute to the fallen first responders who perished that day while climbing the WTC Towers making rescues along the way. Many will complete the climb in full turn-out gear and air packs. This equipment easily adds an additional 60 lbs of weight. Each climber will carry, around their necks, a lanyard and photograph of a first responder who died that day. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is not a race, but an opportunity to honor and remember those who selflessly gave heir lives that morning so that others might live." Proceeds from the 9/11 Stair Climb benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
