Investigate the odd shapes and colorful patterns of seasonal gourds supplied by the Bartlett Arboretum. & Gardens during this 2-day workshop Explore the underlying structure of gourds which have knobby features on top - challenging yet great fun to draw. On Day 1, you’ll learn how to create a contour map to understand the topography of complex shapes. The instructor will demonstrate the use of a spot illustration in graphite to understand three-dimensional form; how to draw patterns; and how to prepare an outline for transfer to drawing paper. On Day 2, we will evaluate and select colors to complete our drawings in colored pencil. The instructor will demonstrate extending the range of colors to achieve a rich, natural looking result, and how to apply finishing touches for the surface details of gourds. Completion of Introduction to Botanical Illustration or similar drawing experience is recommended but not required. One week before the start of class, the instructor will send you tips on how to successfully forage for mushrooms in your area. Classes will be led by Kathie Miranda, a contemporary multi-media artist and educator. She is a graduate of Pace University, with further studies at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and Paier College of Art, she coordinated the Art program at the New York Botanical Garden and is past-president of the New York chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Class will take place Friday, October 22 & Saturday, October 23 both from 10 am - 3 pm. Admission is $160 for non-members. Members can take advantage of a 10% discount at check-out!
