Since the high success/survival rate of dental implants has been reported, many dentists and patients tend to choose an early removal of compromised teeth followed by dental implant therapy. However, we, as medical care providers, need to know the limitations of implant therapies too. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory and destructive disease around the implants and it is one of the most common forms of peri-implant disease. Currently, there are no predictable treatment options for peri-implantitis. In dentistry, we start re-focusing again to preserve/maintain the natural dentition as long as we can. In order to achieve the goal, defining the periodontal prognosis is one of the important factors to generate a treatment plan. In this lecture, I’d like to address the details of periodontal prognosis and what that means to us, and I’d like to discuss how periodontal treatment can improve the periodontal prognosis to achieve long-term success. In addition, the concept of peri-implant diseases will be discussed. Objectives After this lecture, all participants should be able to: 1. Be familiar with some periodontal prognosis systems, 2. Utilize the periodontal prognosis to clinical settings, and share the concept with their dental team, 3. Understand the concept of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.
